MICHEL GAUNOUX POMMARD RUGIENS 2006
Michel Gaunoux's wines are never made in the modern style, all fleshy and open. Rather, they are wines of size and power, built to last. This shows the iron rich soil of Rugiens very clearly, and the power and length remind you why the locals consider this site the best in the village, and as their own near Grand Cru. Today it is just opening from its shut-down period, and beginning to show real elegance and length, with that classic Pommard combination of cherries and meaty notes.
93+ points from John Gilman, who writes: ""...a brilliant bottle in 1999...the bouquet just soars from the glass in a very primary melange of black cherries, quince, coffee, a bit of red currant, incipient notes of game, herb tones, and kaleidoscopic minerality."
