Massican Gemina 2018

For their Gemina cuveé, Massican marries California daring with Italian varietals that normally never meet: Greco from Southern Italy and Pinot Grigio from the North. As winemaker Dan Petrovski says: In Italy, those grapes “would never cross paths, but in California, anything is possible.” The result, writes Esther Mobley of the San Francisco Chronicle: "They’re from California, but somehow don’t taste like it. Ostensibly they’re modeled on the wines of Friuli, in northern Italy, but they don’t taste quite Italian either. …They’re crisp wines, high in acid. They’re fresh — neither laden with creamy richness nor beset by savory funk. Words like “clean” and “pure” come to mind. Saltiness appears. So does bright, relentless fruit.” Massican is named after Monte Massico, the coastal mountain range in southern Italy from where the founders hail. The Massican hills garnered mythological wine-fame when Bacchus took refuge with a farmer named Falernus. So enamored with his host’s generosity, Bacchus cultivated his hillside fields into the most sought after white wine grapes in all of Italy. Talk about goals!
