Chidaine Vouvray Baudoin 2015
Possibly the best Chenin in the entire Loire Valley. Sitting on the crest of a hill and elevated over the surrounding countryside, the Clos Baudoin is a strangely still, peaceful place. It's 2.7-hectares in size with an average vine age of over 70 years. The soils here are clay and limestone, with a deep limestone (tuffeau) subsoil. Compared to the relative approachability of other Chenins, this wine is a deep and tightly coiled Vouvray - densely compact and stony. There are citrus and intense salty, earthy scents and a remarkably pure and focused palate with a deep, structured close. It's an exquisitely shaped, crystalline young Chenin quivering with potential. Loaded with ginger, warm brioche, white peach, chamomile flower, honeysuckle and quinine notes that all ripple through the long, concentrated finish. Ripe, but steely and dry. A beauty.
