Pura Fe Carmenere 2016
One of the most coveted wines in all of Chile’s Maipo Valley is made by Alvaro Espinoza. His conversion to biodynamic farming in 1998 propelled Espinoza to the top of winemaking in this country and secured his place as one of the foremost authorities on expressing the potential and importance of the terroir in the Southern Hemisphere. His celebrated wine Antiyal is often referred to as Chile's first garage wine. 90% Carménère & 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Chile's signature grape Carménère, the deepest, darkest, purplest of all red grapes, needs a long growing season to reach its fullest potential. Grapes are fermented in small stainless steel vats, the fermentation is done with native yeast only, with soft pumping over and a long maceration of 25 days before pressing. After pressing the wine is racked to French barrels, 50% three years old, and 50% four years old where the malolactic fermentation takes place. The wine is aged in barrel for 10 months. Wine is racked every four month and is not treated with fining agents. Rich in berry fruits and spice (blackberries and black pepper), with smooth, well-rounded tannins.
