Pittnauer Blonde By Nature 2022

Want to try a beguiling orange wine with all of the intrigue but none of the weirdness? In Gerhard & Brigitta Pittnauer's Burgenland vineyard, all work is done manually from composting to pruning. There is no calendar that drives them. Nothing is rushed: they believe in quality over speed. They taste for perfect ripeness, select the cleanest grapes, and begin the wine in the cellar in response to the conditions of the vintage. They do incorporate a bit of modern technology: a pneumatic press, temperature-controlled steel tanks and pumps, all to ensure the purity and freshness of the fruit remains. They are making wines that excite them with the unique voice of the varietal and the deep limestone soils of the terroir speaking clearly. This is a fresh, vibrant orange wine, which is at the fun rather than academic end of the orange wine spectrum. The nose is aromatic and bursting with tropical fruit and blossom notes, along with a nice twist of orange peel. The palate has grip but plenty of freshness. The tropical and orange notes continue and are joined with a hint of honey (although remaining dry) on the finish. Tasty! Grapes are hand harvested and see 8-14 days maceration. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeast before the wine is transferred 80% to old oak and 20% to amphora to mature. No added enzymes, no added SO2.
