Chacra Sin Azufre Pinot Noir 2023
Chacra’s story begins with Piero, the mastermind behind Argentina’s cult-favorite Chacra winery, and his deep love for Pinot Noir. Since their first vintage in 2004 with “Trienta y Dos,” they’ve gone all-in on biodynamic and organic practices, working with some of the oldest vines around, dating back to the 1930s. Nestled in the sandy soils of Mainqué village, these vineyards thrive in the extremes of hot days and cold nights, producing naturally elegant, low-intervention wines—some even made sin azufre (yep, no sulfur). No tartaric acid in the reds, early malolactic fermentation, and a pure, hands-off approach make these wines a true vibe for the new wine crowd. But it doesn’t stop at Pinot. Enter Jean-Marc Roulot—basically a Chardonnay legend—who got pulled into this story over dinner at Guillaume d’Angerville’s place. Piero was casually chatting about his Patagonian terroir and threw out the idea of making a white cuvée. Roulot, known for growing some of the planet’s best Chardonnay, wasn’t the type to hop on a plane to Patagonia just for fun. But when he saw what Piero had found—a wild, “magical place” with strong, untamed nature—he couldn’t resist. This wasn’t about replicating Burgundy; it was about creating something entirely fresh.
